On April 3, 2012, the European Civil Rights Prize will be awarded for a third time at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin by the Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma and the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, together with the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation.
This year’s winner is the Human Rights Commissioner at the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg, who was chosen unanimously by an international jury at a recent meeting in Heidelberg, Germany.
The special prize goes to the Romanian journalist George Lacatus.
