ERRC Seeks Volunteer Board Member/Treasurer

The European Roma Rights Centre seeks qualified candidates for a volunteer Board Member/Treasurer position.


The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) is an international public interest law organisation defending and promoting the human rights of Roma.

 
The ERRC pursues its goals through strategic litigation, international advocacy, research and policy development, and training. Established in 1996 and based in Budapest, the ERRC as a Hungarian foundation has an international Board of Directors, employs approximately 20 staff, as well as consultants and interns, and has an annual budget of over EUR 2.5 million.

Role of the Board Member/Treasurer
 
TIME COMMITMENT

  • Two (2) full-day board meetings per year in Budapest
  • Conference calls (maximum of 1-2 per year)
  • Approximately four (4) hours per month in regard to budgeting, expense reports, audit and investments

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced degree in business administration, in finance or economics
  • Experience with budgeting and a solid background in accounting and financial management
  • Understanding of financial accounting for nonprofit organizations is desirable
  • Ability to communicate well in English (the working language of the Board)
  • Strong commitment to promotion of Roma rights

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Treasurer is a member of the Board and is expected to participate fully in general Board oversight of ERRC
  • Works with finance staff to update the Board on the financial state of the organization at Board meetings
  • Reviews draft annual budget and mid-year budget revision with finance staff and Executive Director, recommends budget and budget revision to the Board for approval
  • Reviews the organization's annual audit, recommends audit to the Board for approval
  • Reviews any other financial information presented to the Board in advance of the Board meeting, helping to frame Board questions or comments
  • Provides advice to the Board, Executive Director and finance staff on finance matters
