The Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest is organizing a film week (January 25-30) and conference (January 30), both entitled "Holocaust - Film - Memory". The Holocaust Memorial Center considers it important that Roma also take part in these events.
The Holocaust topic was handled as a taboo in Eastern Europe: instead of remembrance there was silence in Holocaust survivor families – talking about the trauma was hard. But the silence broke in the 70’s: memoires, novels, films began to appear about this era. Several of the recent foreign films never got to Hungary. Moreover, most of the great films can only be seen at festivals. These deficiencies led to the idea of the Holocaust Memorial Center's first Holocaust film week and conference. Let’s watch the Holocaust film representations together and then let’s listen to what the experts have to say about the problems the filmmakers and the audience have had to face.
More information about the film week is attached in English and in Hungarian. Information about the conference is posted separately in the Events section of the Decade of Roma Inclusion website at http://www.romadecade.org/conference_holocaust__film__memory.
