"Read with Us"
"Read with Us" (Olvassunk együtt!), organized by the Open Society Institute (OSI) and inspired by similar successful campaigns in Central and Eastern Europe, aims to instill and encourage the practice of reading in impoverished families, for children and parents alike. With the help of reading, as a tool and as an opportunity, OSI Roma Initiatives would like to stimulate social dialogue as well as to stand up against divisiveness and for reconciliation within Hungarian society. We intend to run a program accompanied by such a high level of publicity—with the active participation of celebrities and opinion shapers—that it can effectively change the reading habits of the participating communities, and at the same time serve as a tool to raise awareness of the need for social and personal responsibility.
The "Read with Us" program will begin in Budapest in April and during 2010 it will visit 15 locations in the countryside, many of them remote villages, to deliver books and the pleasure of reading to children, families and schools in need.
In March 2010, OSI collected Hungarian-language children's books and books for young adults (12-18 year olds) for the program through collection points set up in Budapest at the Gödör Klub, the Trafó House of Contemporary Arts, the A38 boat, Kino and Millenáris.
More information about "Read with Us" can be found, in Hungarian, at www.olvassunkegyutt.hu.
