ROMAworld - International exhibition about the Roma in Central and Eastern Europe

WHEN? 9 July – 12 September 2010, every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., admission free.

WHERE? Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, 10117 Berlin, Dorotheenstraße 12

The Hungarian cultural centre Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB) has dedicated the art and culture of the Roma an international exhibition and a panel discussion with high-ranking experts and politicians. The exhibition tries to express the feelings of Central European Roma through their art, culture and music. 1932 the famous Bauhaus artist László Moholy-Nagy filmed the "Grossstadtzigeuner“ in Berlin. 2009 the artist János Horváth transformed the small village Bodvalenke in Northern Hungary, 90% inhabited by Roma in a "village of wall paintings." The dramatic social photographs of Róbert Maly and Tamás Zádor (Hungary) and the Gemer Photo Club (Slovakia) appear amidst this idyllic imagery. The paintings and sculpture by the Berlin-based artist Katarzyna Pollok link the two sides of the ROMAworld with their Indian origin. "Roma Subculture“, the video installation of Dávid Szauder (Berlin-Budapest) shows the contemporary hip-hop and rap culture of young Roma in Budapest.

On the occasion of the opening high-ranking Roma representatives and policy makers discussed about integration and participation as a challenge:

Rita Izsak, Chief of the Cabinet, Hungarian State Secretary for Social Inclusion
Markus Meckel, German politician (SPD)
Romani Rose, Chairman of the Central Council of the German Sinti and Roma
Katarzyna Pollok, Berlin-based Roma artist

Chair: Manfred Sapper, Editor in Chief of the monthly magazine "Osteuropa“

The exhibition will be on view from 9 July to 12 September 2010 every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., admission is free.

With the kind support of: Slovak Institute in Berlin, bauhaus archiv, ACTA.
